This contemporary dance piece combines video, dance and music / sound art to render this significant drama into a contemporary language.
The drama of Ms. Moreno is a play within a play and contains within it the story of La Loba Negra, of how the Mexican wife of Gov. General Bustamante, one of the more ‘exceptional’ governor generals in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era, avenges his death. Bustamante inspired an alleged conspiracy among the religious to assassinate him through a mob riot. Yet he is scantily mentioned in the pages of Philippine history. The document that recounts Bustamante’s death and the story of La Loba Negra is allegedly written by Father Jose Burgos; the document could actually be a forgery. Fiction and reality blur in the drama, and myth blurs with history.
History is a creative act, and all reconstructions are of course, constructions. Returning to the past means bringing back its presents - in dance, images and song. This is Itim Asu 1719-2009.
The production is ably assisted by Ruelo Lozendo as assistance video director, Albert Banzon for cinematography, Carlo Valderrama for costume design, and Don Salubayba for graphic design.
Presented by Myra Beltran’s Dance Forum with friends and collaborators with the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. For info, please call 0921-278-7333 or email
